EMPOWERED LEADERS - Dealing with those Winter Blues

Welcome Back, Empowered Leader,

I'm so glad you're here, Reader!

The Winter Blues

Are you going through a case of the Winter Blah's? Good thing that groundhog saw his shadow... that means Spring is almost here!

Whether it is the cold weather, gray skies, or yet another round of sinus congestion, Winter can play havoc with our health, mood and energy levels.

As a leader, you may find it more difficult lately to handle your own family's mood changes, let alone those of everyone at work, Reader. Remind yourself to take a few more deep breaths before reacting or replying. Prioritizing self care may be in order, too.

I often found that if I shared what I was experiencing with my team, more often than not, they were also dealing with similar life curveballs. So if you find an article or video that resonates with you, share it with your team.

See a great article about wellness? Find a work-friendly meme about getting sick, yet again? Discover a video talking about self-care or SAD (seasonal affective disorder)? Share it with your team and let the resulting conversations lighten the mood and bring the team closer together in camaraderie.

It's good for the team to remember you are also human. If you can connect with them in small, meaningful moments like this, it opens the door for more authentic conversations and relationships to be created.

It is the small things that bring a team together. Try it and let me know your experience, Reader!

Goals

Already gave up on your New Year's resolution? I've got good news! This past weekend was Lunar New Year... so you can start fresh with a new resolution or goal for the "new year". I won't tell, if you don't tell!

Maybe that 1/1 goal wasn't the right one for you anyway... What would move the needle for you this year?

  • Do you need a sounding board?
  • Just need a quick training on some leadership topic?
  • Didn't think being a leader was supposed to be this difficult?
  • Feel like you are missing some key leadership strategy that everyone else seems to know?

Contact me to discuss if coaching or a training session would best meet your needs! 📩

Communication Styles

An easy - and fun - team building discussion is discovering your own communication style, and realizing that not everyone else is the same style. (This is why the golden rule doesn't always work!)

Download this free quiz. Give it to your team and have fun guessing and uncovering each other's unique communication style, Reader!

Welcome Back, Reader Ah, the generation gap! "They don't have any loyalty." "They are disengaged with work." "They are slackers with no work ethic." Oops, did you think we were talking about Gen Z or Millennials? Nope! These were the common statements the Boomer generation used to describe Gen X when they first entered the workforce. Boomers vs. Gen X... Boomers had valued long-term employment with a single company. Gen X had grown up witnessing corporate restructuring and layoffs in the 80s,...

Welcome Back, Reader Why do we call them "soft skills"? Soft skills are “soft, until you don’t have them, Then it’s hard.” --Chike Aguh, senior advisor of Harvard University’s Project on Workforce Aguh further suggested that the process of developing soft skills is similar to getting good at sports by adding, “You can’t read a book on how to do a jump shot.” I couldn't agree more with his sentiment! Organizations don't spend enough time assessing soft skills in job candidates, and much less...

Welcome Back, Reader Do Your Employees Feel Appreciated? Or do you just think they do? "There are two things people want more than sex and money: recognition and praise." - Mary Kay Ash, Founder of Mary Kay, Inc. While most everyone would like a raise or bonus, that monetary incentive is quickly forgotten. Appreciation doesn't have to cost anything. It can be as simple as a sincere 'thank you'... verbally or written. The problem? "While more than 80% of managers THINK that they are providing...
