EMPOWERED LEADERS - What Does It Mean To Be E.M.P.O.W.E.R.E.D.?

Welcome Back, E.M.P.O.W.E.R.E.D. Leader,

I'm so glad you're here, Reader!

What Does It Mean To Be E.M.P.O.W.E.R.E.D.?

The dictionary defines "empower" as:

"giving (someone) the authority or power to do something"

"making (someone) stronger & more confident, especially in controlling their life or claiming their rights"

How do YOU define "empower", Reader?

Most of us have many stories of bad bosses...

I remember the one who tried to be everyone's friend, but wasn't a leader.

Or the one who had a big ego and treated us like order takers, not competent skilled employees.

Or the one who never stuck up for himself or others, unwilling to rock the boat.

Some of us are lucky enough to have stories of good leaders...

I remember the one who stopped by to thank me after a meeting where I had pushed back on senior leaders for a decision I didn't agree with that negatively impacted my assigned client account.

Or the one who took a chance on me as I changed careers (& industries) because he saw my potential.

Or the one who moved me to his team because he respected how I spoke up to him to make our product even better.

We learn from our own experiences.

...and that shapes our view on what kind of leader we want to be when we get the opportunity.

In defining my Empowered Leaders Framework, I took the word itself for guidance:

First, I looked at the base word EMPOWER...

  • E = Evaluate: acknowledge & overcome limiting beliefs (the 1st step to everything!)
  • M = Model the way: values drive behaviors & culture, understand yours & theirs
  • P = Psychological safety: the baseline upon which trust is earned & built
  • O = Own your voice: be authentically you; be willing to speak up for yourself & others
  • W = What: what drives you/them, what motivates you/them?
  • E = Energize: tying purpose to the vision; creating a true team; driving collaboration
  • R = Recognition: meaningful to each person uniquely (big or small, private or public)

Then, I took it to another level to move from EMPOWER to EMPOWERED...

  • E = Emotional intelligence: understanding self, applying EQ w/ others, sharing EQ w/ your team
  • D = Difficult conversations: embracing (not avoiding); constructive for positive impact

When you, or your organization, are ready to enhance leadership skills to the level of E.M.P.O.W.E.R.E.D., I'm here and ready to guide you on that journey!

Welcome Back, Reader Ah, the generation gap! "They don't have any loyalty." "They are disengaged with work." "They are slackers with no work ethic." Oops, did you think we were talking about Gen Z or Millennials? Nope! These were the common statements the Boomer generation used to describe Gen X when they first entered the workforce. Boomers vs. Gen X... Boomers had valued long-term employment with a single company. Gen X had grown up witnessing corporate restructuring and layoffs in the 80s,...

Welcome Back, Reader Why do we call them "soft skills"? Soft skills are “soft, until you don’t have them, Then it’s hard.” --Chike Aguh, senior advisor of Harvard University’s Project on Workforce Aguh further suggested that the process of developing soft skills is similar to getting good at sports by adding, “You can’t read a book on how to do a jump shot.” I couldn't agree more with his sentiment! Organizations don't spend enough time assessing soft skills in job candidates, and much less...

Welcome Back, Reader Do Your Employees Feel Appreciated? Or do you just think they do? "There are two things people want more than sex and money: recognition and praise." - Mary Kay Ash, Founder of Mary Kay, Inc. While most everyone would like a raise or bonus, that monetary incentive is quickly forgotten. Appreciation doesn't have to cost anything. It can be as simple as a sincere 'thank you'... verbally or written. The problem? "While more than 80% of managers THINK that they are providing...
